Partner Passing Fundamentals Drill Objective Develop proper passing mechanics and clean catching technique while reinforcing communication habits and preparing players physically for practice. Age Categories U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, U18, College, Adult Tags Passing, Fundamentals, Warm-Up, Footwork, Catching Equipment Needed - 1 basketball per pair - Cones (optional, for spacing) Players 2 per group Space Needed Half court or sideline space (5–8 m between partners) Purpose - Develop proper passing mechanics - Improve catching technique - Build communication habits - Warm up arms and shoulders Setup - Players pair up. - Partners stand 5–8 m apart. - One ball per pair. - Players face each other squarely. Drill Steps - Player A starts with the ball in triple threat position. - Player A makes a chest pass to Player B. - Player B catches with: - Hands ready - Thumbs behind the ball - Elbows out - Player B pivots, squares up, and passes back. - Continue back and forth with controlled rhythm. Progressions / Variations - Bounce pass only. - One-hand push pass. - Pass fake before delivery. - Pass → sprint → replace spot. - Weak-hand passing (older groups). Coaching Points - Step toward the target when passing. - Snap wrists (thumbs down on release). - Call partner’s name before passing. - Show target hands early. - Avoid soft or looping passes. Common Mistakes - Standing flat-footed. - Passing without stepping. - Catching with the body instead of hands. - Looking down before passing.
