Drill Description

Continuous Mikan Finishing Drill Drill Objective Improve close-range finishing touch, reinforce proper footwork on both sides of the rim, and build consistent rebounding habits through continuous reps. Age Categories U9, U11, U13, U15, U18, College, Adult Tags Finishing, Footwork, Shooting, Rebounding Equipment Needed - 1 basketball per basket Players 1–3 per basket Space Needed Basket and key area Purpose - Improve close-range finishing - Develop touch around the rim - Reinforce proper footwork - Build rebounding habits Setup - Player starts under the basket. - Stand slightly to one side of the rim. - Ball begins in strong-side hand. - Additional players (if any) wait under the rim and rotate in after set reps. Drill Steps - Player makes a right-hand layup off the glass. - Player rebounds their own shot. - Immediately steps to the opposite side of the rim. - Makes a left-hand layup off the glass. - Continue alternating sides without dribbling. - Maintain continuous movement and rhythm. Progressions / Variations - Reverse layups (finish on opposite side of rim). - Power finishes off two feet. - Add a time-limit challenge (most makes in 30–60 seconds). - Weak-hand emphasis only. - Add light pad or coach contact for older groups. Coaching Points - Eyes on the top corner of the square. - Soft touch off the glass. - Quick second jump after rebound. - Stay balanced on takeoff and landing. - Finish off the correct foot each side. Common Mistakes - Drifting too far under the rim. - Rushing and losing control. - Poor rebounding position. - Finishing off the wrong foot. - Bringing the ball down after rebound. Time Range 4–7 minutes
