Title: Either Side Defend 1 vs 1 Angling Drill Category: Defensive Tactics Sub-Category: Angling, Gap Control, Defensive Positioning Age Categories: U11, U13, U15, U18, Junior, College, Pro, Adult Difficulty: Intermediate to Elite Players Needed: 4+ Goalies Needed: 0–1 (optional) Equipment Needed: Pucks Space Needed: Neutral Zone to Offensive Zone (one half of ice) Purpose: Develop defensive angling skills and teach defenders how to steer puck carriers toward the boards. Improve defensive positioning, stick placement, and route selection to eliminate middle ice opportunities. Setup: Players form two lines along the boards in the neutral zone, directly across from each other. Coach stands near center ice with pucks. Coach is positioned to shoot or slide a puck into either side of the offensive zone. Drill Steps: Coach shoots or slides a puck into one side of the offensive zone near the blue line. The player from the line on the same side as the puck becomes the offensive player and skates to retrieve the puck. The player from the opposite line becomes the defensive player and skates to defend. The defensive player takes an angle toward the offensive player, steering them toward the boards. The defensive player uses proper body positioning and stick placement to prevent the offensive player from cutting to the middle. The offensive player attempts to advance the puck into the zone while maintaining possession. Drill ends once the defender gains possession, forces a turnover, or the play reaches the boards or goal area. Players return to their lines and the next pair begins. Coaching Points: Defender takes proper angle to steer offensive player wide. Keep stick on ice and positioned to block middle ice. Maintain proper gap control. Stay between offensive player and middle of the ice. Offensive player protects puck and attempts to create space. Common Mistakes: Defender skating directly at puck carrier instead of angling. Allowing offensive player to cut to the middle. Poor stick positioning. Defender overcommitting or losing balance. Progressions: Offensive player starts with puck on coach pass. Add shot on net with goalie. Start players from different positions. Increase speed of drill. Variations: Continuous Angling: Players continue drill down ice. Coach Pass Version: Coach passes puck directly to offensive player. Full Ice Version: Play continues the full length of the ice. Time: 8–12 minutes
