Six(+)-Player Star Passing – Follow the Pass Drill Objective Improve passing accuracy and catch-and-pass rhythm while reinforcing pivot footwork, spacing, and continuous movement through a structured pass-and-follow rotation. Age Categories U11, U13, U15, U18, College, Adult Tags Passing, Footwork, Movement, Warm-Up Equipment Needed - 1 basketball - Cones (optional, for positioning spots) Players 6+ players per group (5 on perimeter, 1+ rotating) Space Needed Half court Purpose - Improve passing accuracy - Develop catch-and-pass rhythm - Reinforce pivoting and footwork - Build communication habits - Maintain spacing during movement Setup - Arrange 5 players in a pentagon (star) formation. - Place 1 extra player behind any perimeter spot to start rotation. - Maintain equal spacing between perimeter players. - One ball starts at any perimeter position. - Additional players line up behind one designated starting spot. Drill Steps - Player with the ball passes to the next player in the designated pattern. - After passing, the player follows their pass and fills in behind the receiver’s position. - The receiver catches in triple threat. - Receiver pivots, squares up, and makes the next pass. - Each passer follows their pass to the next spot in rotation. - The drill continues continuously with players rotating around the star. Progressions / Variations - Reverse passing direction. - Add shot fake before pass. - Two-ball version for advanced groups. - Add a passive defender in the middle. - Require jump stop before pivot. Coaching Points - Pass to the target hand. - Step toward the pass. - Pivot before delivering next pass. - Cut with purpose and maintain spacing. - Communicate early and clearly. Common Mistakes - Standing after passing. - Drifting into receiver’s space. - Lazy pivots. - Floating passes. - Losing proper spacing. Time Range 5–7 minutes
