Dribble Tag Challenge Drill Objective Improve dribbling control under light pressure while encouraging heads-up ball handling and confident movement in a fun, high-energy environment. Age Categories U7, U9, U11 Tags Dribbling, Ball Control, Warm-Up, Fun Equipment Needed - 1 basketball per player - Cones (optional, boundary markers) Players 6+ players Space Needed Half court or defined rectangular area Purpose - Improve dribbling control under pressure - Encourage heads-up dribbling - Build confidence with the ball - Create a fun, high-energy warm-up Setup - Mark a playing area with cones if needed. - Every player has a basketball. - Select 2 players as taggers (with or without a ball, coach’s choice). Drill Steps - All players begin dribbling inside the designated area. - Taggers attempt to lightly tag other players’ basketballs. - If a player’s ball is tagged, they perform a quick task (5 controlled dribbles in place or 5 jumping jacks). - Player immediately re-enters the game. - Continue for the designated time. Progressions / Variations - Weak-hand dribbling only. - Reduce the size of the playing area. - Add additional taggers. - Players must change direction every 5 seconds. - Require players to use a specific move before changing direction. Coaching Points - Keep the ball below waist height. - Use the body to shield the ball. - Keep eyes forward and scan the area. - Change speed and direction to avoid pressure. - Stay low and balanced. Common Mistakes - Dribbling too high. - Watching the ball. - Standing still. - Panicking when pressured. Time Range 5–8 minutes Diagram Notes - Multiple players scattered within the defined area. - Taggers highlighted. - Boundary lines clearly marked.
