Drill Description

Title: Delayed Defender 1v2 to Goal Category: Finishing / Attacking Age Tags: U11, U13, U15, U17, 19U+ Skill Tags: 1v1 Attacking, 1v2 Situations, Speed & Change of Direction, Defending Angles, Transition Purpose: Develop attacking confidence in advantage moments while training defenders to delay, track, and recover into a 1v2 situation. Setup: Create a cone line 20–25 yards from goal. Attacker starts at one end of the cone line with a ball. First defender starts at opposite end of the cone line. Second defender starts on the penalty spot. Full-size goal with goalkeeper optional. Drill Steps: • Attacker begins dribbling toward goal. • First defender must circle around the cone line before recovering toward goal. • Second defender steps forward to contain the attacker. • First defender recovers to create a 1v2 situation. • Play continues until shot, goal, or ball out of bounds. • Players rotate positions after each repetition. Coaching Points: • Defender in front delays and forces wide. • Recovering defender tracks with urgency. • Use speed and change of direction to unbalance defenders. • Manipulate the ball to create space. • Recognize natural time limit before support arrives. Variations: • Limit attacker touches. • Add goalkeeper for realism. • Adjust starting distance of recovering defender. • Require specific attacking move before shooting. Time: 8–12 minutes
