Defensive Closeout & Slide Drill Drill Objective Teach proper closeout technique while developing lateral defensive movement, balance, and stamina in controlled defensive repetitions. Age Categories U11, U13, U15, U18, College, Adult Tags Defense, Footwork, Conditioning Equipment Needed - Cones - Basketballs (optional) Players Any number (organized in lines) Space Needed Half court Purpose - Teach proper closeout technique - Improve lateral defensive movement - Build defensive stamina - Reinforce on-ball positioning Setup - Place a cone at the wing or top of the key. - Defender starts under the basket or along the baseline. - Optional offensive player or cone positioned at the perimeter. - Players line up under the basket. Drill Steps - Defender sprints from the baseline toward the perimeter cone or offensive player. - Defender breaks down under control into a defensive stance. - Chop feet on arrival and raise hands to contest. - On coach’s signal, defender slides left and right while maintaining stance. - Defender recovers under control to starting position. - Next player begins repetition. Progressions / Variations - Add a live ball handler at the perimeter. - Finish with a live shot contest. - Perform multiple closeouts in sequence (wing → top → opposite wing). - Add reaction-based slides on coach’s visual or verbal cue. - Add drive-and-recover component. Coaching Points - Short, quick steps on closeout. - Arrive under control — no fly-bys. - High hands, low hips. - Stay balanced and on toes. - Force offensive player one direction. Common Mistakes - Running past the shooter. - Standing upright on arrival. - Crossing feet during slides. - Dropping hands on contest. - Poor balance on recovery. Time Range 4–6 minutes
